Loud bang from radiators
Hi, a bit of a long shot but I'm trying to figure out a problem with my heating circuit and I could use ideas to confirm whether my Tado X system is to blame or not.
My System:
- Viessman vitodens 050W combi boiler
- Tado X system with 9 TRVs
- Tower rail always open in the bathroom
The Problem:
- periodically, wherever you are in the house you can hear a single loud bang coming from the radiator of the room you are in. At night it's loud enough to wake you up (and to scare the dog out too)
- I'm trying to make a video of it but it's difficult to manually replicate. I need to setup a camera with constant recording until it happens
Things I tried:
- I found online suggestions on how to resolve this type of problem
- I bled all the radiators
- I reduced the boiler water pump speed to 60% (from 100%)
- I forced another radiator (beside the towel rail) to stay open at all times
- I cleaned the boiler magnetic filter (this was mainly to check how dirty it was, and it was pretty clean)
- I tried starting from a situation of all TRVs closed, boiler burner off and then turning the target temperature of one room very high to trigger a high rate burn in the boiler but it did not cause the loud noise
I am not 100% sure this has anything to do with Tado but at the same time I never had this issue before installing the Tado X system so at least I would like to confirm it's not Tado. Does anybody have any suggestions on things to check or to try to debug this problem?

I expect it’s brought about by the way you are using the system with Tado.
Would be worth checking the way the affected rads are mounted. When they are straight on the brackets, they can bang when they release tension (usually after cooling down).

Could you elaborate on this? I was thinking it might be also this but I don't think I'm doing anything so strange.
Thanks for the rads mounting suggestion, I'll check if that's a common trait of the noisy radiators0 -
Is your Viessmann wired to run pump overrun? Viessmann have historically flip-flopped a bit on whether it's needed and for a while said it wasn't. At that time, whenever our pump stopped (heating or HW circuit turning off) we'd get some 'water hammer' (loud bang). Don't get that now we have pump overrun. Of course, it may not be that.

I'm not aware of any user settings available to control the pump overrun on my boiler. I can't find anything in the manual. Is there any particular wiring you are referring to?

I don’t have a combi myself so not familiar with how they operate but if you turn off the heating and the pump (in the boiler on combis, I believe) runs on for a bit, you have overrun. Another way to check would be to stop the heating and see if it bangs then. Just suggestions. Could be something completely different.0

With the good weather I have not been using the heating so much, but one thing I found was that one of the radiators had the metal cover on one side very loose and not attached so that could have resonated the noise. I fixed that. However I can't be 100% sure that was the problem. I noticed that another radiator has the same issue (although less loose) and I kept it like this just to monitor.
My current theory is that the noise is triggered by the boiler turning on loudly and that these loose metal pieces just amplify the noise, similarly to the brackets issue reported by @Montage above.
I'll leave it as is for now, until the next time.
