230v zoned system

Hi all

Please can you help guide me. I think I know what I want but I'd rather ask the question and then try to understand the Tado products against my setup

I have a WB8000 system boiler with 3 heating zones and hot water to a cylinder. The current controls are the WB easycontrol smart as the base and a WB smart room thermostat on each zone.

Each room stat controls a 230v valve that I think I now understand (stat calls for heat and the valve opens, this then sends a signal to the boiler to fire).

The base controller is setup wrong at the moment. It is its own thermostat but installed in the cupboard with the boiler. I know it's not right but the current setup heats the house efficiently enough so I didn't want to mess with it while we were heating the house. Now that we are out of the cold season it's time to rectify.

When I go through the product selection wizard it suggests I need the wireless v3 pack. I understand that is required for the hot water side of things but I don't know how it works with the zone valves. Can someone please explain?

Following this I think I need the wired version for the remaining zones. Am I right in thinking this is a direct replacement for the current 230v controllers? If I buy 3 of these can I simply swap them out and the system will still work to heat the house?

The final issue I have is the hot water heat call currently doesn't work. I know it can make hot water as it has a bacteria killing mode that turns on but not off (it will stay on until the overtemp trips the boiler). I understand I need to get this solved before I do anything. If I do in fact need a wireless v3 kit I need to understand how that connects alongside sorting the hot water issue. It may well be a setup issue to do with the main stat being in the cupboard.

Just for complete context: it's a new system put in last year. We get our hot water from solar and overnight cheap electric hence it not being an immediate issue. I could well stay with the current controller but it's cr@p and I don't like it. It's the only smart system the guy was willing to install even after saying he didn't understand how it worked

Apologies for the long post, I wanted to gauge the thought's on here before spending money. I think I need to get someone out to fix the hot water control issue before doing anything else. I am more than capable of wiring the individual wall stats.

Thanks

  • I think I have solved what I need in terms of products. Turns out Tado sell an add-on wireless receiver to add hot water control to a system with purely wired thermostats.

Now I just need to work out how to get the hot water working and how to wire the receiver to the boiler.

Seems a shame to have a clever boiler and throw all the potential away. Can’t you get someone competent in to sort it?

  • @Montage You are absolutely right and it's one of the reasons I haven't sorted yet. It also is a massive shame that we don't have a proper smart option other than the manufacturers solution (a poorly designed one IMO). In my digging it certainly looks like internal modulation works with a relay type thermostat. Not as controlled as proper integrated setup but still more efficient than pure relay.

Time will tell once we manage to get someone in. Thanks for the reply though. I keep it updated even if we don't go Tado.
