Tado Equipment / What I can do?

Hi,

Looking for advice to confirm my understanding on what equipment i need for my current system; and to confirm understanding on what this allows me to do etc.

My current heating system is as follows:

  • Type: S-Plan Plus (separate control of two heating zones + hot water)
  • Boiler: Potterton Promax 24 (heat only) – relay controlled so no Opentherm
  • Hot Water: Unvented Santon Cylinder, controlled by 1-channel hot water programmer with independent motorised valve (HW)
  • Heat Zones:
    • Downstairs (CH1): Has its own wired programmer thermostat (battery based w low-voltage control wiring) and motorised valve
    • Upstairs (CH2): Same setup as Downstairs – independent thermostat and motorised valve

Note: Each of the zone valves (HW, CH1, CH2) controls water flow and fires boiler on-demand.

I assume the required Tado equipment would be the following 2 items:

  1. Tado X Wireless Thermostat Starter Kit, Includes the following
    • Wireless Temperature Sensor X
      • Will replace the existing downstairs Thermostat.
      • Configure App as the zone controller associated with CH Relay on Receiver X – allowing control of downstairs zone – manual adjustments/boost etc
      • Configure App as the zone controller associated with HW Relay on Receiver X – allowing control of HW zone – boost HW
  • Wireless Receiver X
    • Will effectively replace the existing HW programmer
    • CH Relay on the Receiver wired to the downstairs motorised valve
    • HW Relay on the Receiver wired to the HW zone valve
    • There is a manual button on the Receiver X to boost HW.

2. Tado Wired Smart Thermostat

  • Will replace the existing upstairs Thermostat.
  • Rewiring will be established to the upstairs motorised valve.

My Assumptions on what I can do:

  • Tado App will enable me to manage independent scheduling of downstairs, upstairs and HW zones
  • Tado App will allow manual independent temp override and boosting across downstairs, upstairs and HW zones.
  • The existing HW programmer is defunct and can be removed.
  • Tado Wired Smart Thermostat (upstairs) will enable me to temp override and boost the upstairs zone only (no managed scheduling only via Tado App).
  • Tado Wireless Temperature Sensor (downstairs) will enable to temp override and boost the downstairs zone (no managed scheduling only via Tado App).
  • Tado Wireless Temperature Sensor (downstairs) will enable to boost the HW zone (no managed scheduling only via Tado App)
  • Tado Wireless Receiver will enable me to boost the HW zone via button.

@hyeung Hello. In principle, you have identified the correct Tado kit in 1. and 2.

    Assumptions:

    • Tado App. Yes and Yes.
    • HW Programmer and CH1 wired programmer are replaced by the Tado wireless receiver and Wireless Temperature Sensor*. There will probably be some re-wiring and/or jumpering.
    • Wired stat CH2. This will be the 'zone controller' for upstairs. You can adjust temperatures.
    • We always adjust/boost room temperatures using the App. There are more Room Temperature settings and timings in the App that will not be apparent on a Room Stat. The settings in the App can lead to confusion for some users when something unexpected happens.
    • Wireless Temperature Sensor. Yes and Yes. We always adjust/boost temperatures using the App.
    • Wireless receiver. This has a test function and override. For HW boost, we always use the App.

    Question:

    • With two CH zones, presumably you have larger home? Will you fit Tado TRVs? With your boiler, that modulates, these would be good idea when your budget allows.
    • It toook us three months to figure out what worked well for us.
    • Our results from 2022. No promises that anyone can achieve the same.
