Offline Thermostats

Does anyone else have issues with radiator thermostats constantly going offline for no apparent reason?

    Hello @SL4304

Having had a look at your backend, there seems to be only one Smart Radiator Thermostat that is really struggling to stay connected. I can't see in which room it is located, but maybe you can confirm if it the one furthest from the Internet Bridge?

Even a small change in orientation of the tado bridge will have a big impact on the connection in certain directions. That is why I would recommend to try different orientations of the tado bridge (upside down, horizontal, diagonal, flipped etc..)

  • It’s two thermostats that keep going offline and yes they are probably both the furthest away from the bridge. But the instructions say they must be over 3m away from it and they are so why does this happen?
  • You are probably having issues due to the widespread connectivity issues that Tado are having and need to sort out

  • Having the same problem since 2-3 days. And no it's not the furthest one, is not having the most obstacles on their way.
After changing this TRV with one from the other rooms the problem seems to affect just the particular room.

But this started just days ago. It was running smoothly for a month now, and 3 years in a row too. Nothing has changed I'm my homes setup. No additional radio devices.

I've moved the internet bridge 2cm to the left and it lost connection with 2 more rooms.

What is interesting - only the TRVs are affected. Temperature sensors are staying connected all the time.
  • I wouldn't do too much troubleshooting, not until tado has notified this "subset" of people suffering lag and other issues that the problems are solved.

Though I am unsure how we are supposed to find out as they've been really quiet about the issues.

Personally I have disconnected all my tado products until I receive notification of a resolution as the lag issues are causing queued switching issues with my boiler. I've gone back to wired manual thermostat and dumb TRVs.

  • it’s such a shame, TADO aren’t addressing this issue, because apart from this it’s not a bad system. But what bothers me in todays climate of high energy bills, is when one thermostat goes offline, the radiators without thermostats stay on, costing me a fortune.

I think we need to be careful not to muddle up issues here...

Yes, tado is definitely suffering a server side issue somewhere (that they say is "affecting a small number of devices" - regardless if you believe that particular point).

However, if you're losing connection between your radiator thermostat and the bridge, then that is a local connection issue unrelated to the wider problem tado are suffering.

If it helps, I used to have one radiator thermostat that would occasionally suffer disconnects. It was the furthest from the bridge and was obviously right on the edge of the signal strength. Most of the time it would be ok, but it wouldn't take much to disrupt the signal - i.e one time I worked out that a helium birthday balloon sat in an intermediate room was enough to knock the signal out. So it could be something very minor that's changed in your house that's now meaning those devices are disconnecting - particularly if they're the furthest devices away.

I eventually resolved my issues by moving the bridge right into the middle of the house, by plugging it into one of my mesh WiFi nodes in the middle of the house.
  • I agree with your comments. My bridge is already in the middle of my bungalow. So not sure where else to put it to be honest.

@cbd20 not completely true, in normal circumstances yes, however during this current server issue people are having issue with the bridge either not connecting or taking anything upto an hour or more for it to finally connect
