    Maybe you mean the hole on the circular 'side'?
    I think that's used for sampling temperature and moisture levels... See if breathing on it makes humidity and temperature go up...

    I'm not sure that is an LED, popped the lid of a radiatorknob, to try and have a better look, but too small to properly see, and the pictures aren't too clear, although the swwils one is better than the ones of the ifixit article.
    Maybe whatever it's connected to can give a hint, but connections seem to be on the back. Can't really dissect the knobs I have as they're technically my wife's ;-)..
