Wall Tado thermostat

Hi just a quick question. If I fit trv’s to all my radiators including the lounge. Am I right in saying I wouldn’t need the Tado wall thermostat and is it a case of just disconnecting the hard wire to the boiler from the thermostat?

@Mkie64 Hello Mkie64. Is this for new install? Or existing Tado?

In principle … just one device (TRV or room stat) in each room will be the temperature measuring device. Pros and cons. TRVs are generally quite accurate, +/- 0.5 deg C. However, they can be susceptible to inaccurate temperature measurements on large rads or behind furniture. Whereas the wireless room stat can be placed in a sensible location and is accurate to +/- 0.1 deg C. E.g. in our lounge, the TRV is on a large rad next to furniture, affecting accuracy, so we invested in a wireless room stat.

If this is new install …. with a wired or wireless starter kit, the wiring on your present room stat will need to be bypassed (use wago connectors from the starter kit) to allow Tado to control the heating. If you have a system boiler and Y-Plan with a HW tank, the Tado wireless room stat can also control the wireless receiver (in the starter kit) for HW ON/OFF. If you have combi boiler, either wired or wireless will usually do.

If in doubt, you can contact the Tado support chat from the Tado web pages (on the bottom right corner).

Lastly, Tado have indicated that they will launch the 'X' version for the UK in the autumn.

  • I’ve had theTado system for years but now the kids have grown up and gone there is no need to heat the whole house when the heating kicks in. Hence why I thought of putting TRV’s on all the radiators. Just didn’t know if I need to bypass the room stat when all radiators done?

As it's an existing install, leave the room stat alone and install Tado TRVs to the rads in each room, replacing the dumb TRVS. You can set the Tado system for individual rooms to 'call for heat' or have them set as 'independent'. For the lounge, Tado should default to the thermostat as the temperature measuring device.

When adding TRVs, the other question is about a boiler 'bypass'. What's the make/model of boiler? Do you have dumb TRVs on all your rads? If one of the rads doesn't presently have a TRV, that rad may be a 'bypass' for the boiler? If that's the case, best to check the requirements in the boiler manual or consult a professional.
