Difference between thermostat and sensor

Sorry being a bit slow tonight but what's the difference between the temperature sensor and a room thermostat?

I already have the wireless starter kit installed but want to have another device (not TRVs) for back room?

The wireless temperature sensor doesn’t have any physical connections to be wired in to replace a wired thermostat; the smart thermostat does. Other than that they do the same job.

  • Thanks. Think I was getting confused because I assumed wireless would be more expensive.
  • Not true.

While both will wirelessly control heating temperature, only the thermostat will wirelessly control hot water

The wireless temperature sensor does include hot water control in the UK (hot water tank) system . . .

@CatWeazel67 - did you eventually set up a stat rather than a sensor? Looking to do something similar but unsure if the stat (with connections) will click on and off due to in built relay or will be silent like the sensor? Thanks for any pointers.
  • @DM932187 sorry no I got more sensors in the end

@CatWeazel67 - thanks anyway. Likely to go the same route. Just a few stats kicking around on ebay at the moment, and no sensors. Amazon offering 40% off new though. Hopefully not a sign of impending obsolescence!
  • I don't think so, they are often heavily discounted. I got mine new for less than ones on eBay.

@DM932187 @CatWeazel67 From experience, best to buy these types of consumer products from reputable on-line vendors. That gives you a lot more purchase protection (and honouring warranty) than the wild-west of an on-line marketplace.

@wateroakley got mine from the Tado shop on Amazon, is that reputable enough for you. Use camel camel to check price history.

I have two second hand wireless temperature sensors and two TRVs which I bought for very good prices on eBay, both have performed faultlessly . . .

Picked up a new wired stat on eBay for £35, so happy to give it a shot. I’m not wiring it. I’ll just use it as a wireless sensor so it’s safely sandboxed.
