Low battery alert

I had one of my device for month with low battery alert. Today I replaced with brand new batteries, but device continues showing low battery. Changed again with other batteries, but low battery doesn’t disappear. Device reset doesn’t fix the problem. Removing and readding again the device won’t fix the problem.

Unable to fix the problem.

@RobinITA Hello Robin. 'Low battery' warnings will not usually disappear immediately the battery is changed nor by reset. They tend to subsequently disappear by their own accord. If the warning persists, check the battery voltage with a meter. If it's OK, I usually ignore the warning.

you using rechargeable batteries? Their voltage is lower than an ordinary battery.

  • I have a similar issue. Brand new smart radiator valve. First low battery notification after 2 to 3 days of operation. Changed batteries, but tested originals and they were well in the green zone on the tester. A couple of days later another low battery warning notification for the same thermostat. This was one minute after switchover time. So apparently I need to ignore these notifications? It’s not a good start to my Tado experience.

Tado have made changes to the firmware on their devices which in my experience has made the battery alerts more reliable. Since you've just installed, your devices may still be on older firmware depending on how long they were sitting on the shelf.

Can you post the firmware versions of your equipment?

For reference, my devices are on the following versions. I believe these are the latest

    • Smart Thermostat 215.2
    • TRVs 215.1
    • Wireless temp sensor 215.1
    • Bridge 92.1
    • Extension kit 81.1

Unfortunately, there's no way to force an update so you just need to leave them online and let them do it automatically. This can take a few days …

@hbmcwallace best to leave firmware updates to their own devices.

  • Constantly get low battery warnings too - I'm using the v3+ thermostats with the recommended Panasonic Eneloop 1900mah batteries. Have had this issues for years. It's frustrating that this hasn't been fixed, despite now paying £29.99/y for tado. Tado needs to have an option to pick between Alkaline (non-rechargeable) and Nimh (rechargeable batteries). The issues is that alkaline batteries have a slightly different voltage and clearly they haven't calibrated their battery algorithm to identify the difference.

@dileeparanawake Sorry to hear you still have issues. We've been using Tado TRVs with Panasonic eneloops for 2.5 years and don't have any major issues.

Occassionally a single TRV will go off-line. Rarely, everything goes off-line. If we get unexpected battery warnings, we tend to ignore the warning and leave them to their own devices.

In more detail: remote devices consume more power. They may go offline more often, and may unexpectedly go off-line. There again, they can suddenly re-appear on-line. Strange but 'normal'.

  • I have gradually changed over from AA alkaline batteries to the ONLY Tado recommended Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable batteries over the past 5 months, using them in V3 Smart Radiator Stats on 15 radiators. Have been getting low battery emails and warnings on the app spasmodically for a while and after testing with a meter found them to be fully charged, noting that the nominal output was only 1.2volts compared with the usual 1.5 volts for the equivalent alkaline AA batteries! After changing the batteries in 2 stats yesterday, I was still getting low voltage emails & the app was still showing low voltage. I took this up with Tado today via chatbot & human for over 2 hours. They eventually said this had been transferred to another for investigation and reply by email?

However, after that waste of time, I did a quick test by replacing the fully charged Eneloops inserted yesterday with new AA Energiser standard alkaline batteries. They recalabrated ok and no error messages. I then checked the app and lo and behold, it had immediately recorded the batteries in that stat were now full green!

It would therefore appear that it is the information being received by the Tado servers that is being interpreted incorrectly in the case of the 'recommended' rechargeable Eneloop batteries and that interpretation is resulting in the erroneous app information and the emails warning of low voltage & battery change required.

It seems from other posts, that this problem has been going on for some time and it should really have been addressed by Tado. We have spent a not inconsiderable amount of money purchasing V3 Tado kit and it would appear that their efforts are now being concentrated on selling of old Tado V3 items and pushing the sale of their new 'X' product rather than supporting the people that have supported them. Hopefully they will get the message!

@Sprad hello. I note your rechargeable battery complaints. We do not add or subtract to user issues.

@Sprad are you sure your TRVs can use rechargeable batteries? I believe they need to be at a specific hardware version and firmware revision to work

The hardware version is on the label beside the battery compartment and you can get the firmware level from the app. If you share that it might help to confirm if you can or cannot use rechargeables

I have rechargeables in a number of TRVs without issue but haven't put them in all as I've had issues with physical compatibility.
