Replacement of a 3 channel controller

Hello, I am looking for some advice on how I can install Tado at my property and what I need in terms of kit.

I currently have a Horstmann ChannelPlus H37XL (3 channel) programmer which allows me to control the timings for my hot water, radiators, and underfloor heating.

This connects to 2 wireless thermostats. 1 is in the hallway which control the radiators in the property, and the other is in the kitchen to control the underfloor heating. Both are wireless.

My water is pumped via a system boiler/Megaflo system.

I am looking to install a Tado thermostatic valve on each radiator, allowing me to control the temp in each room individually. In an ideal world I would like to replace the existing wiring to the 3 channel programmer and replace the wireless thermostats. However also looking to strike a balance with an easier installation so that I can still achieve the same end result.

Happy to provide more info and share images if that helps!

Thank you in advance

    Questions:

    1. Whats the precise Boiler model?
    2. How many rooms
    3. How many radiators in total? Are they just upstairs, or are they downstairs as well?
    4. How many motorised valves do you have? According to the notes above, you have either 2 or 3:
      1. One for the UFH as a two way valve
      2. One turning on all the radiators
      3. One for the hot water tank - perhaps as a dedicated valve, or shared with (b) as a three way valve.
    5. Is this a large house, or with thick walls, or stone walls, or more than 2 floors?
    6. Is there a wiring centre close to the boiler or the main programmer which controls whats going on?
    7. You say you have wireless thermostats. Is it fair to presume that they have receivers which then interface through the wiring centre?

The simplest, first step is first rewire the wiring centre so that the programmer logic operates as a two channel system,

    • one for CH
    • one for HW
    • with the proxy switches (linked to the thermostats in the kitchen and hallway) controlling the zone valves.

You comfortable handling your wiring? Will you or your sparkie need a diagram and the changes needed?

There was another forum member who was going through the process of swapping a 3 channel controller for a Tado setting. In this link the guide to the steps to change the wiring centre was provided: Help with 3 channel thermostat — tado° Community

Your sparkie should understand the strategy quite rapidly. In fact, while you are making a decision on whether to go with V or X, you can arrange for the sparkie to make the changes and give the Horstman back to you operating as a TWO channelcontroller.

This will ease your migration to a Tado.Once that change is done, based upon your answers we can help set you up.
