Wireless Receiver

Our boiler is an external boiler which previously had its controls on the face of the boiler, I fitted a wireless receiver ideal prt1 into the control panel so we can control the heating from inside the house with a wireless controller. I'm away to put in the tado v3 and wondering if there would be any issues wiring the receiver into boiler and leaving the receiver in the wiring control panel in the boiler to save me running cables from the boiler into the house. Thanks oh its a firebird combi oil fired boiler (not that it should matter)

@Boab Welcome. The range is approximately 10 metres from the Tado Internet dongle to the Tado device.

Our boiler is in an outside cupboard. The programmer/controls were unhelpfully installed in the cupboard as well. I moved the old programmer to the study with a length of 5-core cable, adaptable 5-way electrical box and trunking. The Tado wireless receiver sits there now. The upside is that the lights on the receiver are easily visible to see what the boiler should be doing.

AFAIK (from a previous life) the Tado V3+ system uses the IEEE 802.15.4 wifi standard on 866MHz and the 6LoWPAN protocol. The 801.15.4 wifi standard is designed for low power IOT devices with approximately 10 metre range.

Thick walls definitely affect the range. Similarly, vapour control plasterboard with a foil backing may affect the range. Mounting the V3+ device vertically and higher is reported to improve the range. The newer X model supports multiple 'Matter/Thread' devices (dongles).

If anyone has trouble sleeping, Wiki has a page for IEEE 802.15.4 and links to the standards.

    HTH.

Unfortunately it’s likely the tado° bridge will be unable to communicate with the wireless receiver if the latter is outside the house as the LoPan wireless system which tado° uses is pretty low powered . . .
  • Thanks for the reply, looks like I'll have to route a cable from boiler to inside the house to fit receiver, just wondered as the ideal prt1 one works no issues with signal, just couldn't find what distance the receiver can be away from the bridge and I just looked for an easy install.
