Anyones v3 Thermostat display an incorrect (lower) temperature thus cause continual overheating?

I have an issue that is similar to others regarding ‘overheating’ however I have an extra issue on top that – which is that the actual Thermostat (and App) is displaying the wrong current room temperature, which I believe is causing the overheating – I’ve not seen this mentioned in other “overheating” posts.

Set-up:

  • Wired v3 Tado Thermostat + Worcester Bosch 8000 boiler (Heat only, no hot water)

Rough Schedule:

  • 00:00-07:00 (17 degrees), 07:00 – 20:30 (19 degrees), 20:30-00:00 (17 degrees)

The issue:

  • Thermostat (and App) is displaying the wrong current room temperature causing the system to overheat.
  • Overheating typically happens when there is a large load requested or it’s got to heat more than a degree.

The issue started happening shortly after I added a Tado Additional Temperature Sensor (ATS) Upstairs in 2023 to allow zoning. This maybe a red herring, as I removed the ATS over a week ago and it still happening, but do not recall it happening before the ATS was added to the set-up.

Background:

How do I know the Thermostat (and App) is displaying the wrong current room temperature?

Example 1: Let’s take yesterday as an example:

  • I set the heating to ‘away’ (17 degree default) in the afternoon and the house slowly cooled to mid-18 degrees.
  • I left home at 1500 to walk the dog and get my son home from school, set it to ‘home’ (19 degrees) as I left, so heating should have been on for half an hour or so, then trickle on slowly if the temperature drops below 19 – standard behaviour to stay at 19 degrees until the next time break at 2030.
  • I got home at 1645, the house was hot… the boiler was still on and heating and the Thermostat (and App) is displaying 19.1.
  • I knew this was wrong so reset the Room Thermostat by holding down the button on the thermostat for 10 seconds (I notice a lot of people reboot the boiler, unsure why!)
  • When it restarts, the boiler turns off, and the stat (correctly) says the room is 20.6+ – the App however takes longer to update from 19.1 and show the correct room temperature.
  • My Smart Meter went from £2.80 > £3.99 in Gas so that ‘dog walk’ cost me £1.20.

I recorded this with my phone (hopefully will try to upload somehow/please excuse the mess!)

Example 2: Let’s take this morning as another example (I didn’t record this):

  • Heating is warming to 19 degrees (normal morning cycle from 17 degrees overnight setting).
  • Circa 0740, house feels warmer than normal.
  • I reset the stat (hold power down 10 seconds)
  • Restarts and boiler switches off
  • Room Stat now reads 21 Degrees exactly.
  • Smart Meter is showing over £2.20 at 07.40!

I can’t be around daily to keep resetting the Stat, and its only mid Nov and Tado is costing me a lot more that it should since the heating started coming on again as the temperatures have dropped.

Note:

I went back to the “Graph” that Tado provides in the App to shows daily heating load/temperature to upload and share here – both today and yesterday, it does *not* reflect the point I reset the Stat thus does *not* show the raised temperature after the reset/overheating, which is very odd.

It only shows the incorrect Temp… so in Example 1 above (last night) the graph says the temperature never went above 19.5 degrees…. This morning, it never went above 19.5 either… happy to share these too…

I’m hoping I’m not the only one to experience this behaviour.

Any feedback/thoughts would be appreciated!

Ps: Its Black Friday very soon so I may have to bite the bullet and flash some cash for the Nest Learning Thermostat if I can’t get this sorted…. As that’ll probably be a cheaper option in longer term when running costs are considered… it’s a shame though, I like this Stat and the App 😐️

Thanks, Arun.

  • You're suffering with similar issues to me. I am having to remove my Tado wired thermostats until tado respond to my posts on the subject. I wish I could get this sorted as at the moment the "smart" functions are just not smart, and in fact costing me more in oil than when I had dumb TRVs and wheel thermostats. Plus the wired thermostat downstairs is cycling my boiler way too often, sometimes three times (on-off-on) within 10 seconds.

    I am currently looking at Hive, already on a Black Friday deal on Amazon, not sure if that's an option for you?

    Hello @TadoUser2

    As this is a peer-to-peer support forum, help from a tado° representative is therefore not a given (especially if the problem requires considerable investigation).
    If you would like your question answered by a trained tado° support employee, please reach out via the live chat.

    @damistri
    Your problem also looks serious enough to contact support. While they review the issue, you may want to set a temperature offset

  • Thanks @Emcee - I did raise a ticket shortly afterwards, thanks for the message - lets see what the team come back with.

    With regards to the Offset, I'd already adjusted this to -0.5 degrees (still in place)… I've been testing LOTS of things and me posting this on the Community was my second-to-last resort.

    I appreciate what you are offering, but sadly despite me deleting and reinstalling the app, if I click the "Support" button, nothing happens.

    Are there any other ways of accessing Chat other than via the app?

    @TadoUser2

    Yes, you can follow the live chat instructions here.
    Thank you for pointing out that the support button is not working for you. I will try to find out if this is a widespread issue… it could also have to do with the server problems currently occurring.

  • @Emcee

    Thanks for the link, yes, I found that. The orange dot on the bottom right of the website just gives me this screen. No "send us a message", its just not there.

    Perhaps its because I use Apple devices (Mac/Safari)

  • @TadoUser2
    Thank you for the information, this is very unusual. As a last ditch attempt, could you try allowing cookies?

  • I have exactly the same problem, I can easily reproduce it on multiple devices, your chat is simply broken in Safari.

    @Emcee @343max

    It was a Privacy setting within Safari.

    While in the webpage: Safari > "Settings for (webpage)" > Enable Content Blockers. Uncheck the box and it all works.

    With Privacy Security settings on the rise, this is only going to happen more often. I use standard settings on Safari so it won't be just me. It might be worth mentioning this somewhere in the "how to get help" section.
