Replacing 2 zone nest heating, and wired hot water

Hello,

Looking for advice please as I can't find an existing post close to my setup.

I live in a new build and need to control individual room temps. I have varying heat loss and solar gain in rooms, meaning my 2 zone setup is not precise enough. Especially in my 2 year olds room overnight which gets cold.

My setup is:
System boiler, with HW cylinder in airing cupboard
HW controlled by wired Honeywell programmer in airing cupboard
Heating controlled by two wired nest stats. One nest in downstairs hallway, one in master bedroom.

Developer also setup 4x towel rads to heat up when hot water or heating comes on, so in summer so towels don't go musty.

I want to replace nest and get tado for all my rads to control room temps. I'm indifferent about HW. However while I have the bonnet open so to speak wondering if I should tado the lot? One nest has failed and been replaced inside a year. Rubbish product.

Questions I need help with pls :)
How would I get this to work for hot water and heating? Or am I best leaving HW alone? I don't want to lose the summer towel rail setting. It's very helpful.

Do I need wireless stats for the towel rails or just leave as manual?

I also don't understand if I get rad thermostats on all rads, I assume I don't need room/wall thermostats.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, a lot of detail but appreciate the help.

Hello @obtc101 Welcome. Can you provide more details of the heating system and the equipment you intend to replace? That detail helps existing users to help you.

What make/model is your system boiler? Honeywell programmer model? Is this a typical S-Plan system (two or three zone valves)? Is there UFH? Photos will help, easiest posted from a web browser.

Depending on you system details, some "in principle" answers.

    • Two CH channels and HW? Probably a wireless starter kit and a wired thermostat, plus TRVs.
    • TRVs for your towel rails? It depends. Your boiler model and bypass requirements can have a big influence on the decision to fit thermostatic valves.
    • TRVs will measure the room temperature. +/- 0.5 deg C.
    • You can set up to 10 'zones' for rooms that will call for heat. Very useful for young people bedrooms in family homes.
    • Wireless room sensor/thermostat are, for most rooms, unneccessary.
    • If the TRV is on a big rad, or behind furniture, the temperature measurement may be off. Adding a wireless sensor/thermostat is usually the best answer and more accurate. +/-0.1 deg C.

The most helpful answers from users will come from providing details of the heating system.

    HTH.

    EDIT: Zones.
