@Dawnwhite welome. Tado will give you wiring instructions whom you start the installation. For users on the community site you need to fully describe your system for users to help you.

@wateroakley is right. Your boiler is controlled digitally and you will need detailed instructions. Tado has a duty to give you that.
It is important to write to Tado Sales and ask them to send precise instructions. Do let them know if you have zone valves in your home, a hot water tank, under floor heating and it it is a large home.
If you have problems implementing that guide come back here and we will pitch in.
  • Thank you. Think we have worked it out now. We can just remove the old receiver and put the cables into the tado receiver?
  • When you write 'old receiver, is this the Greenstar old receiver, or a Tado one, or one made by someone else? This is important @Dawnwhite - because the boiler's digital control wiring and set up menu has to be reassigned in the same step. This link identifies the installation guide: Greenstar 25-30 Si Compact ErP Installation and Servicing Instructions | Worcester Bosch. On pages 29-32 the wiring is set out for different modes. It is clear that there is a configuration panel built into the boiler which helps inform it how you intend to control it.

Now, not trying to duck - it is really important that we dont cause a fault on your boiler's motherboard, or mislead its CPU, or it could be forced into a fault. What specific model of receiver is it -and does it handle the thermostat duties, or is the entire programming function operating through that receiver?

  • It's a Honeywell BDR91
  • Yes. According to that product's installation guide (Honeywell Home BDR91 Wireless Relay Box Installation Guide) it is a basic wireless interface in which the base unit operates as a dumb, on-off, relay based command station for the boiler, whilst the portable station serves as the thermostat.

It does not instruct your boiler in digital mode. This suggests, if you want to complete the conversion to digital mode:

    1. Power down everything on a warm day. Double check. Take photographs of how the wiring was set before and after each step below, so if something goes wrong you can still have a warm home.
    2. Disconnect the BDR91 and using the Greenstar's installation instructions ensure that the boiler's start up wiring is restored to its original state. There are often small bridging wires which need to be inserted to make sure the boiler does not listen to the dumb switched side of its control panel and is open to watching its digital triggers.
    3. The redo the boiler's control wiring - that installation manual needs careful reading.
    4. Using the instructions given by Tado, and nobody else's input, configure your Tado kit to operate in E-BUS D17, digital mode.
    5. Go to the boiler's control panel, reading the installation guide and where appropriaste update the boiler's settings to ensure it does listen to its digital control feeds.
    6. Stop and double check everything. Make sure you've got the logic straight. Also make sure you have a strategy to undo all your changes swiftly.
    7. Make sure that your app recognises all the components. Turn on the power. Make sure the thermostats are registering temperature - and use the thermostats to force power from the boiler. Does it work? If not, return all the wiring to where it was and contact tado support informing them there is no heat - this will force them to prioritise your case. If their advice makes no sense, come back here.

  • There is no bridge in the receiver. I have a white cable not connected to anything. Do I do anything with this?
  • @Dawnwhite. Did you ask Tado to give you a full set of implementation instructions? Unfortunately, a busy fixing a major bathroom leak at home and wont have time to study your wiring needs until after Xmas.

That aside, the Honeywell receiver has nothing to do with the bridging wire. Was stating that you need to study that implementation guide (link provided previously) for the boiler, and ensure that it is set up so that it has no trace of being run in relay mode and is unequivocally set up for EMS-BUS.

This low voltage strip picture, takes two wires from the Tado controller on connector No 2. DO make sure that Tado gave you instructions to get it right.

This high voltage strip picture, if you check carefully, is where the original Honeywell cables were fitted.

Notice the bridging wires that they identify in Fig 42 for LR (heating) and LR (HW). Fit those bridges.

    • Before turning it back on, please double check everything. Make sure that you have the correct instructions from Tado to use the correct Tado controller. There are three possible controllers - you must have the right one.
    • If the Tado instructions do not mention the process of getting the wiring right and using the correct wireless receiver, do go back to Tado Support and get them to confirm the detailed process of wiring as well as the recommended product. Make sure they are aware that you had a Honeywell BDR91 talking to your boiler and get a correcting update. Let them know if you have a hot water tank, underfloor heating and if you have more than one central heating zone.
    • My worry is that these instructions are normally issued when you ask for them. Did you? What was missing in their response?

Then you may have to use that front panel and update the settings on your boiler. The installation guide (given in the link above) should give you the information. Failing that, contact Worscester and ask for the specific instructions to ensure that the boiler is configured to work with its EMS BUS, with an external EMS-BUS controller.
