Tado X with 2 zones

Hi, I want to replace my heating controls with Tado X.

I have an older combi boiler (not opentherm) and 2 heating zones. The hot water flow to the zones runs through a diverter (mid position) valve rather than 2 separate valves. There is a 2 channel programmer that allows me to control both zones. Obviously the hot water just looks after itself via the combi so no programmer for that.

The first zone is my UFH zone downstairs. It has a wired thermostat and it's own pump. When the stat ask for heat the diverter moves to open flow, the boiler fires and the pump starts pumping.

The second zone is upstairs and is just standard radiators. They have TRVs but not smart ones. The upstairs landing has another thermostat that controls heat. When that calls for heat the diverter moves to open flow and the boiler fires.

I'd like to get rid of the programmer and swap the 2 stats to Tado X ones, happy for those to be wired as there are already wires there, so why not, or wireless, don't mind. I need to diverter to move one way or the other (or middle), the UFH pump to switch on and the boiler to fire and supply water.

I'd rather not change the diverter to separate valves, but will if I have to.

It looks like what I need is Wireless Smart Thermostat X - Starter Kit incl. Programmer with Hot Water Control for each zone but not sure, there doesn't seem to be a wired alternative or the programmer doesn't seem to be available separately.

Any help really appreciated.

Stefan

@Orangeart Hello. In principle, the simplest answer would be: a) a wired starter kit, and b) an add-on wired thermostat. They are battery powered and replace your existing thermostats. You could leave the programmer wiring alone and set both zones to 24/7. The thermostats will be the 'zone controller' for the zone valves and you run everything from the Tado App.

You can add Tado TRVs on the upstairs rads as required. Each Room (TRV) 'zone controller' will be set to the upstairs thermostat.

Tado X or Tado V3+ products should be suitable. Strongly recommend that you purchase the products from a well known supplier.

  • Thanks for that, as I thought.

So the only real advantage to the wireless version in my set up (given I've got thermostat wires already) is that I'd not need the bridge if one of the thermostats was wireless as that is built into the wireless received.

Having g at least one wireless receiver also would allow my to control hot water if at some point in the future I moved away from a combi boiler and needed to keep a tank hot? That might be an advantage.

I think either way I'll wire out the current programmer for neatness and to avoid confusion in the future if someone else takes over the property.

    Thanks so much
