Hot water boost button doesn’t work?

Am I being daft? I thought the right hand button on the controller is supposed to boost hot water for an hour. If I press it the light goes out as soon as I let go. If I hold it down I can hear the boiler start, but the second I let go the led goes out and it stops.

If I go in the app I can then press boost hot water and it does it fine, LED come on and it works. But I thought I can do it from the main controller button, so it’s annoying if I have to go find my phone and open an app instead of pressing a button in the wall next to me.

Maybe I misremember, but I thought that’s how it worked and I can’t seem to find a manual that’s not all about installing it (which is all done well over a month back).

  • That switchover role often depends on zone valves feeding back when asked to open the HW supply side. If they don't move quickly enough, the switchover may not complete - and this is usually a sign that the valve motor is close to burning out.

Have you tried turning on the hot water via the App? Does it have the same effect?

  • Yep, as stated above, works perfectly in the app. I just thought it should work from the controller button too. It’s a y-system, so if the valve doesn’t move fast enough it doesn’t know, I just get a slightly warmer radiator than I should. Hot water only or both should be the default position anyway.

I'm assuming you're talking about the V3+ system and not X?

When you say controller, I'm guessing you mean the wireless receiver with the 3 buttons on top?

If so, then according to bottom of the following support page two of those buttons are merely test buttons to test the heating and hot water rather than switching it on for a time:
    https://support.tado.com/en/articles/4511057-what-do-the-symbols-on-the-wireless-receiver-mean

Assuming you've also got a wireless thermostat as part of your tado install, you can control the hot water on that. If you've got multiple then go into the app, click Settings then Rooms & Devices. Click Hot Water and it'll tell you which device allows you to control the hot water.

On the relevant smart thermostat press the round button once for heating and press it again for hot water control.
  • Nope, it's an X. So don't think I can do hot water from the thermostat X.

In here: https://help.tado.com/en/articles/9701263-can-i-control-hot-water-with-my-smart-thermostat-x it says "if you want hot water right away, you can push the Boost Hot Water button on the Wireless Receiver X, which starts heating your domestic hot water immediately and lasts for 60 minutes."

But it doesn't. It lasts for 0 minutes. It lasts for 0 seconds even. Although if I hold it for a couple of seconds the boiler starts to kick in, then turns off on letting go.

I have the "UK version" Wireless Smart Thermostat X [incl. Programmer with Hot Water Control and OpenTherm] here…
