Guide to EnergyIQ for oil boilers

Below is a step‐by‐step guide you can use to calculate your heating consumption in kWh and input it into Tado’s Heating Bill (Energy IQ) section for an oil/kero boiler

My tank uses Kingspan wireless monitor as you’ll need a reasonable accurate view of what is in your tank. Estimating based ok % may work but won’t be as accurate.

Step 1: Determine Your Oil Consumption
• Record Your Tank Readings:
For example, if your tank showed 820 litres on January 4 and 358 litres on March 11, your consumption is:

820 litres – 358 litres = 462 litres

Step 2: Convert Litres to kWh
• Know the Energy Content:
Kerosene (or heating oil) typically provides about 10.35 kWh per litre.
• Calculate Total Energy:
Multiply your oil consumption (in litres) by the energy content per litre:

Total Energy = 462 litres × 10.35 kWh/litre ≈ 4,781.7 kWh

Step 3: Adjust for Boiler Efficiency
• Use Your Boiler’s Efficiency:
If your boiler is 93% efficient, not all the energy in the fuel becomes usable heat. You should be able to get this based on the last service you had.
Multiply the total energy by the efficiency (as a decimal):

Usable Energy = 4,781.7 kWh × 0.93 ≈ 4,446.98 kWh

This is the energy actually delivered to your home.

Step 4: Calculate the Unit Cost per kWh
• Convert the Cost per Litre to Pounds:
For instance, if the fuel cost was 58.49 pence per litre, that’s:

£0.5849 per litre

• Cost per kWh Before Efficiency Adjustment:
Divide the cost per litre by the energy content per litre:

Cost per kWh = £0.5849 ÷ 10.35 ≈ £0.0565 per kWh
(or about 5.65 pence per kWh)

• Adjust for Boiler Efficiency:
Because your boiler only delivers 93% of the fuel’s energy as heat, the effective cost per usable kWh is higher. Divide by the efficiency:

Effective Cost per kWh = 5.65 pence ÷ 0.93 ≈ 6.08 pence per kWh

Step 5: Input the Data into Tado
1. Set the Date Range:
• Start Date: Use the date of the latest tank reading or last delivery (for our example, March 11).
• End Date: Use today’s date.
2. Enter Consumption Data:
• In Tado’s Heating Bill (or Energy IQ) section, find the field where you can enter your energy consumption. From step 2.
• Enter the usable energy calculated in Step 3 (≈ 4,446.98 kWh).
3. Enter Unit Cost:
• Enter the cost per kWh (from Step 4, approximately 6.08 pence per kWh).
4. Confirm and Save:
• Verify all entries are correct, then save the information.
• Tado will now use these inputs to provide an accurate analysis of your heating costs over the selected period.

Summary Example
• Tank Readings:
January 4: 820 litres
March 11: 358 litres
→ Consumption: 462 litres
• Energy Calculation:
462 litres × 10.35 kWh/litre = 4,781.7 kWh
Adjusted for 93% efficiency: 4,781.7 × 0.93 ≈ 4,446.98 kWh
• Cost Calculation:
58.49p per litre = £0.5849
Cost per kWh = £0.5849 ÷ 10.35 ≈ 5.65p
Adjusted for efficiency: 5.65p ÷ 0.93 ≈ 6.08p per usable kWh
• Tado Entry:
• Start Date: March 11
• End Date: Today
• Consumption: 4,446.98 kWh
• Unit Cost: 6.08 pence per kWh
