Tado, 2 zone heating & Opentherm compatibility, & do I need smart thermostats if I have smart TRVs

hi all,

Had an early, simpler Tado system about 9 years ago who worked well. House had a combi boiler, 1 single thermostat and rads without TRVs. In particular, we found it easy to set up on off times & temps, increase/descrease temps via the smart thermostat, and also loved the geolocation feature that would start heating the house when we were heading home.
have just bought a new-build house last year - modern boiler (in garage) and expansion/holding tank upstairs. We have 2 wall thermostats and the house is dual zone - upstairs and downstairs for heating. All but 2 rads have TRVs - the ones that don’t being located close to the wall thermostats.

So, I’m keen to make our heating system “smart”, but having read a lot of the posts on here I’m wondering if I should bother - limited functionality, yet to be delivered features, and reliability all seem to be common complaints whether v3 or “x”….

I have a couple of dumb questions please:

  • if the Tado x smart TRVs can each call for heat from the boiler, what’s the purpose of having smart thermostats? (Told you it was a dumb question!)
  • My Baxi boiler is OpenTherm compatible. As I have dual heating zones, is Tado Opentherm compatible for dual zon (Hive only O/T compatible for single zone)?
  • Looks like advanced/early start is “coming feature” but doesn’t exist yet for Tado X. This is a must-have for a smart heating system for me.

so many other ideas and feature wish-lists I’ve read on these posts in the last few days, also making me pause the outlay at this point… I guess I’m just seeking some thoughts/advice regarding the above from those that are on the journey!
