thread network key in app

To read the Thread network key (for Matter), the current process is as follows:

  1. Contact support and ask them to unlock the debug menu in the app
  2. Read the encoded network key and send it to support
  3. Support decodes the key and sends it back to you

It would be great if the network key could just be accessed directly in the app. Otherwise, it's not possible to connect third-party Matter devices when using Bridge X.

  • I support your request. :-)

But the last part is not true. You can use your devices without them even be accessible by tado.

When setting up Tado with Apple Home, the Thread credentials get stored on your phone/iCloud Keychain. You can then set up Matter-over-Thread devices with your phone, which shares the Thread credentials with the device. (I guess for Android this might be similar)

Additionally, apps like the Home Assistant companion app can access and use these credentials. You can send them to the Home Assistant server. (See: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/thread/#making-a-network-your-preferred-network) )
From there you can use the credentials to add additional thrid-party border routers to the network. (See https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/thread/#case-2-creating-a-ha-border-router-when-there-is-an-existing-network )

In the HA companion app, you can also navigate to Settings → Companion App → Debug → Thread, where you can see the network key, extended PAN-ID and active dataset. (I guess the active dataset is what you send back to the support, as it contains everything needed by the Thread network.)

Welcome!
