Thermostat seems dead after battery change

  • Thanks Mbraeke1. Solved!
  • I also had one contact corroded. Strange cause batteries looked fine.
  • Same issue as everyone else here. Tried various sets of new AAA batteries, all combinations of ways…the tin foil trick worked for me. Thanks, @mbraeke1
  • Tried EVERYTHING suggested here and nothing works
    Beginning to hate the system!
  • @Tessa

    Can you describe the issue?

  • Same issue - Wireless Temperature Sensor is dead - batteries charged, orientation correct, connection good. Totally dead. The difference for me was that prior to this the readings malfunctioned, i.e. constantly reading 50% humidity, 20C.

  • I've found a solution to this!
Before I go on, as an engineer I have to say that the quality of this product is not good, should never happen.
The root cause would appear to be a poorly designed battery holder.
To remedy I purchased a 3xAAA battery holder for £3 or so off ebay. To fit this I removed the metal terminals from the existing battery tray, I did this by prizing them up carefully. I then removed the red and black wiring from the terminal leaving the maximum length I could. I then simply twisted the new wires to the left over wire. I double sided taped the new tray to the back of the box. It's not beautiful, but it works and cost £3!

Do you have a picture of the solution?
Also, when did you buy your units? I'm trying to figure out if this is a production error of earlier models, or if I'm just delaying getting the same error again later, if I buy new ones to replace the bricked units.

  • Reviving this old thread because it just saved me from giving up and buying a replacement for our three-year-old thermostat which suddenly stopped working after a battery change. The batteries were indeed the wrong way round. Correctly inserted, it sprang back into life instantly. Moronic bit of design by Tado! Phew.

    @joeymoose

I would also like to know what you have purchased and how this has worked for you because mine is totally broken as you can see

  • @giwrgis

They sell these AAA battery holders for electronics projects. Not sure about the dimensions, but maybe this could work? I've seen them on AliExpress for less than a Euro.

  • @mbraeke1 ,

thanks a lot for the information provided. The only thing now is that we need to find out something that fits the dimensions.
If someone here has something that is known to fit please share it.

  • @giwrgis

I just looked up a few of them online to get an idea of what their dimensions are. I found 3 different suppliers that mention the dimensions of their tripple AAA adapter:

    • 53 x 37 x 13 mm
    • 51.5 x 37 x 13.5mm
    • 50 x 38 x 14 mm

Seeing these sizes, I would verify whether you have enough space to host 53 x 38 x 14mm (I think the thickness is the critical one).
If it fits you are good to go. I don't think any others you might find online will be any bigger than these dimensions.
If it was up to me, I would first get rid of the old plastic walls with connectors using a dremel or similar tool to open up the space (you won't be needing that any longer). Next you might have more then enough real estate to insert one of the ones I was referring to. Attach it with some super glue, solder the wires and you are good to go.

  • Makes sense!

    Thanks a lot @mbraeke1
