Energy-IQ how can Tado actually tell when my boiler is lit and so make cost calcuations?

Assumption:

Tado only knows that some part of the system is requesting heat not that the boiler is on.

What actually happens:

Hot water only has a time period. During this the hot water thermostat will turn off the boiler once the required temperature is reached. Tado does not know this.

Heating that is regulated by thermostatic radiator valves shows as on even when demand is low but present. In most cases my boiler has turned off because the maximum system water temperature has been reached.

Turning the maximum system temperature down would adversely affect the achieveable hot water temperature and slow down the rate of temperature increase in the rooms.

So how can Tado make estimates of kWh and costs?

Am I right, any thoughts. 🤔

When I installed Tado in October 2021 I took out a one year subscription to Energy IQ. I found it to be next to useless in terms of data produced. Basically just noise, with the false illusion of accuracy. I did not renew.

By far the best data source for me is my smart meter and various free apps that collate and report that data. If I want to know when the boiler is on I really only need to check my half hourly gas consumption readings. Nearly all gas usage for us is for heating. Hot water is quite trivial, as is cooking, and time of day tends to allow judgements about usage which is probably not for heating.

Here's a sample from my (free) Hugo app. Not only do I get to see my energy consumption in half hourly increments, but also accurate and up to date costs.

  • Thanks for that. Time for a smart meter!
