Extension Kit problems - please help
Hi,
We are having problems getting Tado to change temperature in the morning as follows…
Recently, about 50% of the time, when the temperature change in the morning should kick in (to change from a night setting of 13 degrees to around 20 degrees in various rooms) the system does not react. Also, when this occurs the light on the Extension Kit changes from it's normal "pulsing" to going on and off twice and then on all the time for about 5 seconds, on repeat. To get the system working I have found that pressing the reset button on top of the Extension Kit immediately gets the Central Heating system working and the "pulsing" state of the light returns. It is then OK for a few days before repeating this.
Have contacted Tado and get no joy, they don't seem to acknowledge the state of the Extension Kit as being a problem….(?) Even though it obviously is.
My questions are….
Can anyone suggest why this is happening, and a possible solution?
Would changing from an Extension Kit to a Wireless Receiver solve this?
I have tried countless resets of Internet and also the Internet Bridge to no avail….
Thanks for reading,
Kev S

Hi @Kev54
What firmware level is your extension kit on? I believe the latest is 81.1 but it'd be interesting to know if yours is on a different version
Last October, I had a similar problem with mine where it had a LED status (double blink then off. repeating every few seconds) that wasn't listed on the link below. Unfortunately, I didn't get to the bottom of the issue and it hasn't returned since it was reset. My firmware has been on 81.1 for several years
You could try a Wireless Receiver but there have been numerous reports of the relays sticking in those but at least it would have warranty

Hi, my extension kit level is Firmware 99.1, so assume is latest…?
Unsure whether to buy Wireless Receiver or just bin Tado altogether. It is being totally unreliable and I am quickly losing faith in it altogether…..!!

Interesting. Mine is at 81.1 and has been for a few years. Since the device was replaced by the Wireless Receiver, I assumed it wouldn't go higher than that.
Regarding binning it. That's your call but if you've invested in other components, it could be a big amount to get rid of. Personally, I'd persevere and try a Wireless Receiver knowing that it has warranty and a money back guarantee

@Kev54 the light pattern you describe is shown on this page:
Essentially it seems to be that your extension kit is losing connection with one or more of your thermostats. It therefore doesn't know what it should be doing and is entering the "manual control only" state.
The light pattern you describe is "Interrupted On" where the previous heating setting is maintained - in this case 13 degrees.
I had this problem a long time ago. You've likely got a thermostat (or the extension kits itself) that's right on the edge of range to the bridge. I'd try moving the bridge if you can before paying out for new equipment.

Thanks for this cbd20. Probably this is the case…….
Our bridge is about 9 metres away from the boiler / extension kit through 1 wall into my garage. Can't see a way of moving the bridge nearer other than running a large cable through my lounge, which can't happen. I assume the bridge needs to be connected to the router at all times? It ran OK for about 3 years then this problem has started happening. The only cables given are about 20 cms long connecting to a power supply and the router…. Any ideas how this can be sorted?
Thanks,
Kev S

What thermostats do you have and how far are they from the bridge? As it could be one of them losing connection temporarily.
A quick way to check those is do a Blink Display for each one in the app. It should, all being well with tado servers, be almost instant. If one of them shows a noticeable lag or doesn't blink at all, that could be the problematic one.
If it's the extension kit itself that is harder to check.
The thing I found was that I had one radiator thermostat that was furthest from the bridge was most of the time ok, but was clearly right on the edge of the radio link range. However a subtle change in my house would cause it to disconnect. E.g we had a birthday helium balloon sat in a room at one point between the bridge and that thermostat and it was enough to knock the thermostat offline. Moving the balloon and it came back online!
In my case, I already had a mesh WiFi system so I moved the bridge from the main router and plugged it into one of the ethernet ports on the node nearest the centre of my house to try and get the furthest devices well within range. I've not had a problem since.

Hi again cbd20,
Thanks again for this.
I've blinked all the radiator valves and all react straight away, so assume my problem is with connectivity to the Extension Kit.
Baring in mind what you said regarding the balloon….I've moved things away from the garage wall that might impede the radio waves. Also, done a reset of the router and bridge to see if that helps. We'll see what happens now…..!!
Many thanks for taking the trouble to read and reply to me. Greatly appreciated.

Hi @Kev54
Note that there is another similar discussion on the thread linked below
Seems that it could be a sign of an impending bridge failure so might be worth trying a replacement before it fails completely

Hi All,
An update….After reading comments made I moved our broadband router onto a side table as opposed to at a lower level and this has led to our Tado system working fine now for nearly 2 weeks!!
Hopefully this has cured our problem….my only comment now, is, why this has happened after 2 years in the same place and working fine…?
Tado moves in mysterious ways….!!

Good news!
The only thought I could have is that the signal might have been marginal and perhaps a small change (e.g. furniture moved) somewhere else in the house has caused it to drop too far
You could try a WiFi extender with ethernet port or powerline adapter to position the bridge optimally in centfe of the house and ideally on the first floor to ensure best signal for all devices1
