Tado X Thermostats Disconnecting.

  • As a recent (and disappointed) tado x customer I'd just like to say thanks to all those on here who are trying (despite Tado's best efforts) to understand how to get this system to work reliably. I don't know if Tado are being purposely mis-leading or just a bit incompetent but they certainly imply that the tado x system is a mesh and that if you have loads of devices (i.e. TRVs) then you will effectively be flooding your house with connectivity.

It didn't take me too long to realise that this just isn't true and that the system is very much "hub and spoke" and each of the TRVs needs to be fairly close to a tado router for it to work. Maybe all the routers form a mesh but this isn't what tado imply in their marketing and I didn't realise I had to flood my house with thread routers to get reliable connections.

On top of that, I've only had the system for a few week and I've had several random disconnects which have required me to power cycle either the router or the individual tado devices. Even for devices only a few yards from a tado router so that isn't to do with range, it's just about flaky connectivity. Of course, there's nothing in the tado system which could give you diagnostic information and nothing definitive on the tado website about how this all works so it's just guesswork and reading forums at the moment.

This system could be very good but it's just not ready for market imho and I am definitely suffering from buyer's remorse.

  • Agree with everything you say @Askdarren The marketing would lend you to believe that the system should have better connectivity. I have done what a previous poster said, I split out the 5G and 2.4G network and this seems to have helped. I have had no random disconnects since I done that. I big undertaking as I have to reconfigure loads of stuff. Like you @askdarren, I have had valves disconnecting that were so close to the Tado Bridge that I could have held the valve and router in each hand, literly a couple of feet away.

The technical support is almost non-existence. The only lead I got was that there was an issue with the WiFi, and the suggested solution was to remove some of the devices in my house, while splitting out the 2.4G network with a different name may have helped.

It seems bad design if the problem is as simple as that. I have loads of 2.4G devices in my house and there does not be the same issues.

Anyway fingers crossed because it has the potential to be a great system and really saving fuel for me. Hopefully it will settle down with the changes made,

Other claims are a bit disingenuous in that it works with Google but wont connect to the Google border router. Also in Ireland it is not possible to buy the bridge unless its part of a starter pack with a thermostat or valves and I have already had the full complement of valves.

Anyway I will try it for another couple of days and hopefully get to the bottom of it. I haven't put the effort into setting up timers or many of the features because of its unreliability.

  • @Michael_Barrett I actually have another 4 TRVs and bridge x being delivered in the next few days and I'm genuinely not sure whether to just send the whole lot back. I'm very way of Tado at the moment tbh. There's the whole "mystery" about how it actually works, there's the very limited (if any) technical support and the nail in the coffin may be their recent "marketing test" of seeing if they can get away with charging people to use the basic app.

I'm not getting a good feeling about Tado from either a technical or customer service point of view even though I still think the basic system has real potential in the right hands.

I'm on the fence at the moment.

  • Splitting out the 2.4G from the 5G network seems to have worked. I have had no dropouts in the past 7 hours since I reconnected the 4 border routers to the newly created 2.4G network. If the solution was that simple, why could support not have asked me to try it a month ago. I will update tomorrow evening 24 hours after I split out the network.

@Askdarren I had my doubts as well, but I had put in so much stuff, it would have been such a hassle to return it all. If this works I will keep the stuff, if not I have booked in a series of Amazon returns to send the stuff back.

  • Just an update, its a lot better with the splitting of the 2.4G and the 5G wireless network

Just a couple of radiators disconnected this morning, and one of them is very close to the bridge.

Ill update further this evening as promised when I have a full 24 hours.

  • Thanks @Groove200 some interesting information there.

  • Splitting out the 2.4G and 5G network didn't work.

Still a lot of disconnects. 18 devices currently disconnected.

  • My installation consists of:-

    Radiator Valves (21):-

    5 at software 251.2

    8 at software 253.2

    6 at software 250.1

    2 at software 243.1

    Wireless Bridge (1):-

    1 at software 245.1

    Wireless Room Thermostat (3):-

    3 at software 251.3

    Wireless receivers (3):-

    2 at software 249.1

    1 at software 253.1

  • Just to update, no device connected now. I wonder is there some outage on the Tado side.
